"Sandiacre" history

I suppose it could be said that the foundations of what was to eventually become the "Sandiacre" Kennel were laid in the early 1950's. When as a young man Jack went along with his friend to buy a tricolour puppy from the Marnabrook Kennel, of Larry & Marna Richardson.

This puppy won very well at shows and eventually he was shown at Crufts, when the World famous all rounder of his day "Leo Wilson" was the judge.
Jack became inspired by this early success of his friend, and purchased a puppy from Tommy Tomlinson (Selstoma) a very well known kennel at that time…. Needless to say, this youngster was not so successful in the ring, but at least, he had created what was to be a life long interest in the Rough Collie.
Though continuing to take the Dog Magazines, Jack was unable to show because of work commitments, however, in 1960 when Sandra & Jack were married. It was Sandra’s wish to purchase a Collie as a companion, Jack thought it would possibly be large for the property they were living in, suggesting something smaller, so eventually they purchased a Shetland Sheepdog, which was their first dog together.

Sandra was working as a receptionist at that time, and was meeting company representatives. One who proved to be the son of the Secretary of the Local Canine society. He suggested that the puppy should be taken to the local Match meetings.
Success was hard to come by! And so the competitive spirit beginning to capture Sandra, it was decided upon a better quality sheltie should be purchased, this came from Mrs M Wilson of the"Kinreen" prefix.
While Sandra & Jack were visiting the kennel, they saw what appeared to them a promising 6mnths old Rough Collie Bitch, and to their delight a few days later, Mrs Wilson telephoned and offered them the puppy "Karousel of Kinreen" who was in the main Ladypark bred.
"Dusty" was shown locally, and did quite well, however, when she was entered at ther first Championship show, it was soon obvious to Sandra & Jack that she was not able to compete at this level. So many more championship shows were attended, just watching, and noting the type they were attracted to.
After much thought & discussion their idea's for the "ideal" "Sandiacre Collies", as their prefix had now been registered, were to comprise of the wonderful construction and body shape of the "Jefsfire" kennel, and the beautiful head, eye & expression of the Dunsinane Collies.

Sandra Wrote to Alan & Kath Jeffries, asking for a sable bitch "with no outstanding faults"??!!
Alan was very kind in his reply, and said if he had such a wonder, he would certainly be keeping her! However, he could offer on breeding terms, a one year old bitch, which had already done some winning at top level, Sandra & Jack could not get to Fradley fast enough to take up this offer…. Jefsfire Gaytweed had become the start!!!!

After Tweeds second litter mated to a dog of Sandra's & Jacks choice, was to a young unshown male Jefsfire Fury, which produced two bitch puppies, one was returned to Kath & Alan, who eventually became the first Champion to be bred by Sandra…. Ch Jefsfire Gay Return which was registered with the Jefsfire prefix, because of the terms.

Sandiacre String of Pearls

The litter sister "Seawitch of Sandiacre" was retained, and in due course, was mated to a young Royal Ace of Rokeby, sired by Dazzler of Dunsinane, but carried Jefsfire Bloodlines on the dams side.
This litter contained an outstanding glamorous puppy bitch, who was to prove to be, all that Sandra & Jack had dreamed of CH SANDIACRE STRING OF PEARLS

At her first ever show, The Yorkshire Collie Club Open show, she went through from Minor puppy to Best in Show, and she was to continue in this fashion throughout her show career, by co-incidence "Pearlie" as she was known, gained her Champion title on the same day as her sire gained his, at The West of England Collie Club, and beat him for the honour of Best in Show under the late Tom Purvis (Danvis Collies).

Sandiacre Softly Softly

"Pearlie" for her first litter was mated to Dazzler of Dunsinane, and produced their first male, who was to be an outstanding sire…. SANDIACRE SOFTLY SOFTLY ….

Later to enhance the Jefsfire/Dunsinane combination, they purchased a second bitch from Kath & Alan Jefsfire Fashionette whom when mated with "Dazzler", produced their third Champion Ch Sandiacre Secondhand Rose.

Sandra continues…….
When "Gaytweed" was mated with "Royal Ace" her litter consisted of only male puppies, and as it was not intended to keep another male at that time, concentrating mainly on the bitches, it clinched our decision, to purchase a puppy bitch from Mrs Betty Eglin (Rokeby).
We were able to have the puppy of our choice from the outstanding litter of Ch Rosalie of Rokeby mated with Dorgano Double Ace of Rokeby (Royal Ace son) which then became our fourth Champion in Ch Sandiacre Request of Rokeby.
Over the years as nearly all the Collies bred at Sandiacre have been dominant sable, to introduce tricolour blood, we decided to purchase a tricolour Royal Ace Granddaughter Nellwyns Silhouette whom we eventually mated with the famous "Danvis Laydyvale Blue Mist" (a Softly Softly G.G. son)
This litter produced our first blue merle, Silver Jubilee of Sandiacre.
"Lee" was the most glorious coloured blue, who had a successful puppy career and as a young adult, was exported to Denmark, where she gained her Danish & International title, and was the first Blue merle import to take her title.
In our ownership before being exported she was mated with Jefsfire Jamie of Piphoney, (a Royal Ace son) which produced a beautiful merle male Sandiacre Snow Warning, (who was eventually exported to Sweden) and behind many blue merle's in Sweden & Norway.

Numbers have been deliberately kept to a maximum of 12, Breeding maybe 2 litters per year, while still retaining the older retired show winners.
Throughout the years it has always been a joint venture for both of us, we both having served as committee members for The British Collie Club, Jack as a committee member of The Yorkshire Collie Club, and Sandra a committee member of The Collie Association. Each one of us, served each of these clubs for quite a number of years.
Jack only occasionally exhibiting in the ring, owing to a serious leg injury he received as a young man,
Therefore felt it was more sensible for Sandra to exhibit the dogs, while. Jack always helping at the ringside, plus driving the long distances to the shows.

We are both proud of the fact that we have continued to breed Champions from 1968 to the present day, having owned or bred 21 English Champions plus 47 Champions throughout the World.
We are also proud that many prefixes in Collies such as Lassina, Tavena, Merriemede, Sindalyn Romadale, Damirayan, Glenbowdene, Chaquinta & Glenspey, plus Castleweb ( Ireland), Nyitramenti (Hungary), Golden Gates (Ukraine), Estelle (Spain), Artziak (Spain), Roysta (Germany), Greilins (Sweden), Ledapark (Switzerland), Fribyn (Finland), Sandymoor (Sweden), Tunslett (Norway), Windiacre (Norway), Brackenlea (Australia), Dornbrea (Australia), Linkwood (Australia) are all descendants from "Sandiacre bloodlines"
Over the years, at different times, Sandiacre has been Top Kennel of the year, Top Breeder of the year, owned the Top Stud Dog of the year, Top Brood Bitch, and four times Top winning Puppy of the year.

Sandiacre in the 21st Century

We now have eight Collies in our kennel, two Champion Males in Ch. Sandiacre Sacre Bleu & and his full brother (later litter) Ch Sandiacre Schumaker, plus six bitches, Sandiacre Spare My Blushes who is already going into the history books as a leading dam, having produced both these champion males, plus a daughter. Our own Sandiacre Spend Spend Spend (1CC & 2 Reserve CCs) and her sister, Irish Ch Sandiacre Sole Mio, (Group winner & Res Best in show All Breeds) and Ch. Sandiacre Sexclusive (ResCC) (Both in different ownership) plus South African Ch. Sandiacre Scarlet Lace.
Spare My Blushes (in her first & second litter produced Top winning Collie Puppy of the Year 2000/2001).
Our other bitches are Sandiacre Strike A Pose (1CC & 1 reserve CC), Sandiacre Social Graces (1CC & 2 Reserve CCs) and Sandiacre Scarlet and Gold (a championship show winner and litter sister to Ch Sacre Bleu) and her daughter Sandiacre See You Again, who is dam of "Strike a Pose"
Ch. Sacre Bleu has already proved himself as a dominant sire, at the present time, he has sired two Champions, plus, another son in Sandiacre Say it with Music with 2 CCs and 2 reserve CCs, (in different ownership) our own Strike a Pose with 1 CC & 1 reserve CC, plus another CC winning bitch, and three other different Reserve CC winners, and many Stud book & Best puppy winners, too numerous to mention, also we have recently introduced Ch. Sandiacre Schumaker at stud, he is the younger brother of Ch Sandiacre Sacre Bleu and his puppies look to have the same outstanding promise… so our line continues……….
Both Jack and I are still active Breeders, Exhibitors, & Judges, and we are both very proud that we both have had the honour of judging CRUFTS Sandra in 1988, & Jack in 2002 and Jack has had the honour of being invited once again to Judge at Crufts in 2008, we have also had the opportunity to judge in sixteen different countries throughout the world many in Europe, and Scandinavia , plus Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa where our hobby has enabled us to meet many wonderful people, who have shared our interest in our beautiful breed THE ROUGH COLLIE.
Sandra is currently KC approved to Judge Rough Collies, Smooth Collies, and Shetland Sheepdogs at Championship Level and is a judge of varieties and other pastoral breeds since 1974 at Open show Level.
Jack is currently KC approved to judge Rough & Smooth Collies at Championship level and is also a judge of varieties and pastoral breeds at Open show level.

From 1960's to 2003-10-06 Sandiacre Descendants

Here are some of our Collies and their descendants, together with our ideas of a suitable combination of bloodlines, which invariably have to change over the years. (All cannot be listed owing to allowance of space) By using our knowledge of type and applying it accordingly….Sandiacre has proved to be a dominant line for almost four decades.

From buying our first Shetland Sheepdog as a companion, “from small Acorns Oak Trees grow”, which we feel applies to our life in Dogs, where common sense prevailed, never being kennel blind, and being selective of our breeding bitches, whom have been the strength of our kennel.

Both Jack & I wish all Exhibitors & Breeders
Good Luck and every success with your New Hopefuls.
