ROUGH
COLLIES: — to be invited to judge at Crufts was a great
honour, as it can only be described as the supreme accolade
of one’s judging career. I can say this occasion fulfilled
all my dreams, by having the top entry in the working group
& to have the pleasure of judging so many of the breeds
lovely champions. It was especially exciting, as many of the
dogs were new to me that I arrived without any pre conceived
ideas & an entirely open mind.
The green
carpet certainly was a great asset, which added to the glamour,
this together with the electric atmosphere made no other show
comparable.
I was pleased
with both my line ups, therefore at the final I was filled
with elation that my eventual CC winners met with great approbation.
Two general
criticisms come to mind, which I hope will be taken in constructive
spirit. In striving quite rightly for the correct balance
of head, are we perhaps putting too much emphasis on stop,
where flat skulls are being sacrificed as a result? Also one
cannot throw away one’s chances on the move, as was
apparent in otherwise lovely dogs. Once again it was interesting
that the influence of genealogy was profound.
Puppy D (10) 1. Dent’s
Denlea Drummer Boy, rich coloured s/w with
a full white collar excelling in conformation, presented an
excellent overall profile, profuse coat which was beautifully
groomed, good neck, shoulder & forefront, good legs &
feet, well balanced head, well filled muzzle, good slop, &
altogether was constantly alert with his ears giving an expressive
masculine outlook;
2. Williams’ Clorita Copyright, g
s/w without any white collar, most appealing in head, especially
for his lovely sweet eye & expression. Not quite as mature
in body as 1 or the same coat & body condition. Moved
well, & he has time to develop further, it will be interesting
to see him again in another year;
3. Husselbee’s Second City Gambler.
Jun D (25) 1. Lister’s
Shayleen Marillion, tri. which had the most
beautiful neck & outline, excellent conformation covered
by a wealth of coat, which perhaps for the moment is slightly
wavy Beautiful turn of stifle & short hock, enabling him
to move so well with correct tail carriage, stood well in
front on lovely legs & feet, correct balance head with
good stop & eye placement, showed steadily giving his
best;
2. Hassock’s Camanna Chicken George,
another tri which perhaps appeared a better black than 1.
He instantly appealed for his most beautiful eye & expression,
excelled in all head features, correct stop, well filled muzzle,
neat ears & he is a good showman. Altogether much shorter
throughout than 1, therefore in profile lacked the neck, however,
this is only a minor criticism, as he is a lovely dog who
I am sure will go further as he matures;
3. Denlea Drummer Boy.
Yearling D (20) 1. Hodgson’s
Tameila Gordon Bennet, when I first saw this
beautiful merle in the ring, I had a penchant towards him,
as he is completely balanced throughout, standing, he presents
a superb profile, lovely neck let into correct shoulders &
perfect backline, excellent hindquarters which, together with
his ebullient temperament moved confidently & freely round
the ring. Found his head to be clean with the correct parallel
plains, good foreface, correct stop all this together with
his most gorgeous eye & expression, well placed ears,
presented a Collie which befits the Standard in nearly all
aspects, coat was at its best which was perfectly groomed
& of the most glorious colour & to my mind perfect
merling, the very quintessence of the blue merle. At 2 years
old, I feel his best days are still yet to come as he could
be fraction bigger. Despite this, I could honestly say, I
found him to be the dog which typified outstanding merit &
quality. It gave me great pleasure to award him his first
CC;
2. Wilkinson’s Altricia Golden Dice,
another lovely dog who gained his Junior Warrant as a puppy,
it was a pity he had to meet 1 as he is a dog I like, &
a real glamour boy with a huge while collar enhancing his
super neck & shoulder. Perhaps he is slightly longer on
the leg than 1, but presents a good profile. Correct length
of head, ears on lop plus a sweet eye & impressive outlook,
moved freely; 3 Guest’s Copperfleet S’only Teddy.
Grad D (21) 1 Malpas’ Lanlin Mr Nice Guy, on first impression
he is every inch a masculine male, very mature outlook, standing
looking very majestic, lovely outline, good head, profile,
beautiful neck & shoulder, in full bloom & expert
presentation & handling, head is in balance with his body
& he has the most gorgeous eye & beautifully expressive
ears. I considered it to be a great pity that his tail carriage
let him down badly; 2 Pitman’s Dajansted Golden Sabre,
lovely refined head, super ears & he appealed to me greatly
for type. Although he had not quite the head profile of 1.
Very well handled & he has a good topline & well bent
stifles, moved well;
3. Norris’ Leighvale Oliver Twist.
Post Grad D (17) 1. Purshouse’s
Redferns Golden Boy, this was a Collie that
I have seen for the first time, & I certainly hope I will
see him again, made a distinct impression upon me, very much
the type I like, masculine with a refined quality outlook,
thought his head, eye & expression quite superb, beautiful
g/s with tremendous mane & featherings, in profile presented
a noble picture, very good neck & backline. For the moment
showing a little daylight underneath. Moved & showed steadily
throughout, one whom I consider to be of CC quality;
2. Mortiboy’s Lanteague Harvest Moon at Silvermoor,
in this class when comparisons have to be made, I was slightly
irresolute in my opinion, as I consider both dogs to be of
exceptional quality, and it is always disappointing to split
hairs, as he was a very close second, excellent neck &
depth of rib, good turn of stifle, moved well. Perhaps the
deciding factor being my preference for the slightly longer
head of 1. Although this boy had a gorgeous expression, I
can well imagine these two will contest well against each
other in the future;
3. Jackson’s Sassari Dead Eyed Dick.
Mid Limit D (25) 1. Jones’
Matai Don Quixote, have seen him on several
occasions & as I have never been in close proximity to
him, I have been under a misconception between him & his
litter brother, r/s huge shawl collar, most attractively marked
which adds to his overall glamour, stood out against his competitors
for neck & shoulder, & his coat was in superb condition,
upstanding dog shown to every advantage, lovely head, correct
stop, he is particularly sweet in eye & expression, well
placed ears using them constantly, I certainly considered
for the top honours, as he moved with effortless gait, however,
I consider that another year can only ameliorate his qualities
to give him the finish required;
2. Hickson’s Simply Blue of Bririch,
loved him when he used himself, lifting his neck & shoulder
to his handler who always seems to achieve the best from her
dogs, movement as always from the Bririch Collies was a joy
to see, definite example of handling & moving a dog, quality
dog with a beautifully moulded head, good foreface & underjaw,
correct stop, good eyes, giving a natural enquiring expression,
good body, legs & feet. For the moment his coat appears
to be at an inbetween change showing obvious rust undertones
among his blue. Feel needs to cast again for the coat to clear
in colour;
3. Jones’ Erjon Eyecatcher.
Limit D (24) 1. McDonald’s
Blue Storm of Rothpen, another merle I have
seen on several occasions & I have often admired him from
the ringside, he did not disappoint in the slightest on handling,
once again his swan like neck & gorgeous outline won him
this class, darker shaded blue with a super collar, make &
shape are difficult to surpass, being perfectly balanced,
lovely turn of stifle, well let down hocks, moved well, refined
head giving a very nice general overall appearance, ears which
he used continually throughout
2. Simply Blue of Bririch;
3. Freeman & Congdon’s Lanteague Golden
Harvest.
Open D (17) Considering the number
of champions competing together in here, it was no disgrace
to be unplaced as I feel all to be worthy champions, therefore
it was only on personal preferences were they selected from
a really lovely class, which was headed by 1. Williamson’s
Ch Coldamar Wor Geordie,
it has never been any secret that I like him, he is one I
have long admired since his puppy days, I consider him to
be of exceptional quality, he is a paler golden s/w shown
in prime coat & condition. Perhaps his critics will say
he is small, I do not find him so, as he is unmistakably masculine,
at the same time he is ultra sweet in his expression which
for me is particularly characteristic of our breed, reminds
me in some ways of the late great “Ramsey” as
he has his ears right on top of his, especially sweet eyes,
correct stop & yet a full well rounded muzzle, making
for a lovely head, excellent body proportions & moving
round the ring freely with purpose, he seemed to sense my
approval of him, by showing himself & appearing acquiescent
to win such a strong class. Deserved the Res
CC;
2. Lister’s Ch Sablepark
St Bruno, tri whom I judged as a junior at a club
show & awarded him the class, has now fulfilled all that
early promise & made a good champion whose outline &
conformation superseded his rivals, has the most fantastic
neck let into correct shoulders, ideal body lines, has an
almost regal stance, where he cannot be overlooked in any
company, masculine head, well moulded foreface good underjaw,
ears on top, projecting the image of superiority which is
a great asset in any showdog, moved really well round the
ring & his handler achieved the best from him throughout;
3. Skyrme’s Ch Emryks
Owd Peculiar.
Veteran D or B (12) 1. Burtenshaw’s
Ch Jeffield Esquire,
what a lovely class to judge, I congratulate all the exhibitors
as each Collie was indeed a credit to their owners, &
it gave me a great deal of pleasure to judge all the lovely
“golden oldies”. A great 10 year old who looked
absolutely magnificent, coat & condition was superb, belied
his years as he is a very youthful gentleman whom was an example
in movement his effortless stride was indeed the movement
we all strive for. Head is still good, also his lovely eye
& expression also his super rich colour, looked the good
champion that he is, a credit to the Pelido kennel for the
condition of this lovely Collie;
2. Hollamby’s Jayverly Christabelle,
once again this placing was a great achievement, a bitch against
the male, a high quality bitch of 8? years, again in superb
coat & condition, all quality & most definitely a
laster, she still has a beautiful head & lovely conformation,
moving & showing well, it was also interesting to see
she was out of the same dam of the reserve CC winner, she
obviously has indomitable influence;
3. Black & Penwarne’s Ch
Chrisarion Capricious.
Puppy B (11) 1. Mitchell’s
Damirayan Dear Laura, most glamorous g s/w,
beautiful coat which was perfectly groomed, most appealing
puppy of 11 months, beautiful head properties, flat skull,
perfectly placed stop & a gorgeous eye giving a very sweet
expression, lovely body shape, superb hindquarters, lovely
legs & feet, presenting a very pretty picture;
2. Williams’ Clorita Centre Fold,
I see is litter sister to Copyright, she is very similar to
her brother only more refined, & very feminine, lovely
head, sweet eye & expression. Not quite the coat &
furnishings of 1;
3. Parks’ Barlect Black Rapport.
Jun B (26) 1 Jones’ Erjon Epaulette,
ultra feminine girl who appeals greatly for type, has the most
lovely body lines covered by a wealth of coat, not a glamorous
colour, but she is particularly sweet in head, with the most
lovely eye & expression, neat well placed ears, liked her
enormously, moved well, showed steadily. I feel with maturity
will indeed finish a most beautiful bitch; 2 Evans’ Carristina
Chantilly Lace, this young lady certainly attracted my attention,
as she is a lovely merle, perhaps very mature at the moment
leaving most of her age group behind, lovely outline & pleasing
head, well forward in development, very striking colour. Today
she seemed disturbed by the noise & each time I looked in
her direction, she seemed restless & would not give her
best, I am sure on another occasion will take on the best to
win further; 3 Hawkins’ Matai Satin N’Lace at Brilyn.
Yearling B (16) 1. Lawrence &
Sibbald’s Westoak Nikita, each time
I looked at her she was standing exactly right, ideal conformation,
covered by a close well fitted coat which was beautifully
presented, rich r/s, very good bone, legs & feet, presented
a good overall picture in the ring, head is well balanced
with moulded foreface, correct stop & good underjaw, pleasing
expression, moved & showed with confidence;
2. Lofty’s Deancourt Miss Jessica of Playwell,
thought on first impression she could win, it was a very close
decision between these two lovely bitches, super tri, which
look my eye, once again for her outstanding conformation,
great showgirl with a beautiful outline & body shape,
very nice head profile &, shows like a dream. As she is
fuller in eye than I personally like the decision went in
favour of 1. Nevertheless a really lovely bitch;
3. Morgan’s Sundorne Simply a Wish at Tafton.
Grad B (20) 1. Miller & Miles’
Pellismer Gypsy Girl, this sable was shown
in first class coat & condition, lovely reach of neck,
correct shoulders, good backline, really stood & gave
everything to create the impression I was looking for, refined
quality head, correct stop, & lovely eye & expression
& ears right on top, shown in full bloom & handled
very well. Has a tendency to stand badly behind at times,
in her eagerness to show herself. However, can straighten
herself when required;
2. Harper’s Angel Eyes at Beechmere & Damerik,
have judged this lovely bitch as a puppy & she has certainly
matured along the right lines, has the most lovely head, flat
skull, correct stop, well rounded foreface & correctly
placed ears, altogether excelling in head properties, I think
her greatest asset is her most lovely eyes giving a soft dreamy
expression, good body lines with good bone. Unfortunately
she has not quite the coat to take her higher at the moment,
when in full coat, will I am sure win well;
3. Deancourt Miss Jessica of Playwell.
Post Grad B (18) 1. Staniland’s
Tashadon Black Cherry, tri who is now 22
months, I think she is now at the stage where she is in need
of a litter for her to mature. Very much what I like, being
feminine with that quality air, very pretty head, & for
me is ideal for size, & is analogous to her half sister
& brother whom were my top winners. On the day she was
not quite in full coat although she responded to my attentions
when required which transformed her appearance. It will be
interesting to see if she will fulfil her obvious potential
as she matures;
2. Clitheroe’s Cloverbank Comic Capers,
one cannot overlook her she gives of her best the entire time,
standing away from her, she presents the overall picture of
femininity, at the same time she appeals for her great reach
of neck, at the moment looks as though she is just coming
into coat which enhanced her outline, refined, quality head,
really lovely eye & expression, & ears used continually,
handler complimented her very well, good hindquarters &
moved well, a bitch I am sure will be constantly recognised;
3. Tyler’s Aspera Daisy May.
Mid limit B (21) 1. Tyler’s
Aspera Love Me Do, aptly named, as she is
a sweetie which always appealed, glamorous g/s shown in fresh
coat, showing off her lovely make & shape, presents a
very pretty picture standing, showing her virtues, which is
her lovely head, well moulded foreface, correct stop, well
placed eye & her expression is most appealing. Has rather
small neat ears which she will show to advantage. Moved quite
well going away, although she was not quite so positive in
front action. However, she is such a charming bitch, with
great feminine appeal will be heard of many limes in the future;
2. Cloverbank Comic Capers;
3. Armour’s Careith Carol Anne.
Limit B (27) 1. Staniland’s
Tashadon Jenny Wren, I am not the only judge
to be attracted to this most beautiful bitch, who has so many
virtues, most impressive of which, is her overall balance,
she immediately made an impact for her type & quality.
I consider she portrays all that I like to see in a bitch
without any exaggerations, head is a clean wedge with correct
parallel plains & she is the ideal size with a particular
sweetness that is “the Collie”, moved with effortless
gait & was true both in front & behind with reaching
stride in profile, this is the first time I have seen her
in finished coat which did not hide her excellent structure,
each time I looked at her she had this mesmeric effect upon
me, I thought her to be truly beautiful in every aspect &
on the day found her to be invincible. CC
& BOB;
2. Hawkins’ Arranbrook Song of Gold at Brilyn,
I awarded her best puppy in show in 1979 & I was astonished
to find she is now 9 years old, another really lovely bitch
who deserved to be made up, she has competed well against
much younger opposition, but her quality is such she must
always be at the top, lovely head & eye, together with
lovely body lines, & good movement a great example of
the laster she is;
3. Mitchell’s Dainty N’Dear of Damirayan.
Open B (24) Again a lovely class
to judge with many champions of high quality. 1 Hollamby’s
Ch Jayverly Yours Truly,
I have never seen her before, and it was indeed a pleasant
surprise to see her & to appreciate such a lovely bitch,
she is 7? years old with the appearance of one much younger,
with similitude in type to Jenny Wren, being a beautiful golden
s/w with a wealth of coat groomed to the last hair, great
credit to her owner/handler, superb conformation, excellent
body lines & depth of rib, super hindquarters which enabled
her to move so well, she also has a really lovely head still,
& she presented a glamorous picture in the ring, a very
worthy champion. Res CC;
2. Lister’s Ch Abbestone
Ruby’s Love at Myberns, another gorgeous champion,
moved well, shown in superb coat & condition, with all
the furnishing & petticoats of a mature bitch, she still
has a very beautiful head & eye, really classy outlook
& looked an all quality champion it was a great pleasure
to judge her & see her in the ring once again;
3. Brown’s Roxwell Risque of Pachris.
